Really enjoyed this one. It's muddy dark... more of a feature for RKOs at the time than a problem. Once you get used to that it's fantastic. Mitchum is probably the best looking he's ever been in film. There's a fight scene in the shadows that compares to the best of film noir (and one of the best Western fights.) I like the characters on the edges. Walter Brennan is there but obviously dialing back his funny stuff and delivering a serious performance. It's shot what looks like on location which is a relief. Harsh weather also plays a role. Some westerns, even the serious ones come across as all shot on sound stages which takes me out of them. Not this one. And Charles McGraw is in it... unfortunately his performance is simply as loud thug. But, man that buffalo coat!
One final note, what in the world is with that rosy-cheeked Mitchum on the poster? Did the poster artists watch the wrong movie?
