Discuss Captain Marvel

Is it just me or is this movie starting to look terrible?

I love Marvel, I've seen nearly all of their last 10 movies or so in theaters, but I am getting a really bad feeling about Captain Marvel. They are really leaning into this "strong female character" virtue signaling and that's always a bad sign as evidenced by Ghostbusters, it tells me they can't sell the movie on just being good, they have to try and imply if you don't see it or aren't excited about it you must hate women. The images I've seen look blah and Brie Larson just does not seem like a good fit for this role let alone what she's been saying on social media.

Conversely I never got this feeling with the Wonder Woman movie, and of course movies like Atomic Blonde or Mad Max Fury Road weren't sold on female empowerment even though both films had fantastic female characters and could have easily tried to hype that aspect.

There's a new saying "Get Woke Go Broke" which means that whenever a movie/show/book tries to sell you on how it's so pro woman/gay/trans/minority/whatever while not selling the story or characters then it's pretty much confirmed to be trash and no one buys it. I really hope I'm wrong but I fear the MCU is going to fall into this trap and go the way of Disney Star Wars.

That's pure assumption. They haven't even used her to promote End Game yet, which is a mistake in my opinion.

In an interview with Cosmicbook.news, Kevin said that Captain Marvel will be MCU’s most powerful character. He said, “She’s one of the most popular characters in our comics. She’s one of the most powerful characters in the comics and will be the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Lol one of the most popular in the comics? Yeah from my research thats 100% not true.

She is very powerful even in the comics (she gets stronger the more energy she absorbs, so blasting her with an infinity stone like the power stone would only make her uber). However, that doesn't really make her a Mary Sue that will fix everything.

WHO KNEW CAPTAIN MARVEL WOULD ARRIVE IN THEATERS WITH AN IGNORANT HATE CLUB TEARING IT DOWN BEFORE IT EVEN OPENS.

Where have you been? That same thing happens with pretty much every MCU movie.

Mary Sue - a type of female character who is depicted as unrealistically lacking in flaws or weaknesses. I understand she is supposed to be all powerful but I feel like its a low blow to the fans to just introduce a character to clean everything up nice and tidy. Maybe Im jumping the gun here and she will need help to deal with Thanos.

We don't really know what she'll do in End Game yet, so that's not really a fair assumption. Just because someone is powerful doesn't mean that they're the key to success. Hulk was powerful and he was pretty much made ineffective. Doctor Strange is powerful, but that didn't really help them against Thanos. Scarlet Witch was uber in Infinity War, still they didn't make her all that effective in stopping Thanos.

Very true. So ill hold my judgement for the final product. Im hoping for the best, but the pessimist in me always leans towards the worst possible outcome.

When you go from projected 180-160 to 100 million there is chance that it might not do as well as expected. Ant-Man and the Wasp and the Thor films didnt do to hot either. So the MCU isnt bulletproof. This film will be a critical success with a 98% RT rating, but that dosent mean much when all the critics know if they give it a bad review they will be labeled as misogynistic racist pigs. I want to see what the audience thinks. This wont go broke, but I dont think it will perform as well as SJWs want it to. Larson isnt exactly putting on a welcoming face for all races and sexes. And Marvel isnt reigning her in at all.

I think you make a good point, it's Marvel so it might not bomb, but I think it will underperform big time. Ant-Man and the Wasp came out on the high of Infinity War and opened with $75 mill so I expect Captain Marvel to open below that, maybe $60-ish, and if the audience word of mouth is bad it's going to drop like a rock and have no legs and might break even depending on the budget. It is most likely going to rely on overseas markets.

The point being though, it would be on track to open much bigger if the trailers had been better and if its star had kept her toxic "activism" out of it

Agreed. But I think it will break 100 million opening easy. If I had to put a number on it I would say around 120 million opening weekend. Unless something goes really south, like a tape of Larson calling all white males to not see the film because its not made for them or some shit. But I think you are right about the word of mouth, its either going to make it or break it. And Im not talking about the shills known as critics word either. And if they are going to rely on China they are dead wrong. China dosent exactly see females as equals. Unless you are a cyborg woman like Alita Battle Angel, I hear its making really good money over there right now.

Have you seen the impressive Chinese advance ticket numbers?

I guess they're more tolerant than you thought.

I dont put much merit into advanced tickets sales. I remember when Solo had more advanced ticket sales than Black Panther and was supposed to break records...and we all saw how that turned out.

$34.3 million opening day in China, 2nd highest ever for a comic book movie.

THE WORLD SEEMS TO FEEL DIFFERENTLY ABOUT CAPTAIN MARVEL THAN THE PALE LITTLE GIRL HATERS SKULKING AROUND THIS SITE AND MANY OTHERS ON THE NET.

People might have paid to see it, but it doesn't sound like many of them liked it.

IVE READ PAGES OF CRITIQUES AND WHAT I SEE IS EVERYONE SAYING THIS WORKS AND THIS IS GOOD ETC..BUT THEN SAYING THEY EXPECTED MORE OR IT WASNT AS MEMORABLE AS INFINITY WAR...ITS A SOLO HERO ORIGIN FLICK,IT DOESNT HAVE TO COMPETE WITH THE TEAM UPS AND AS FAR AS ASSBAGS EXPECTATIONS..WELL.THAT SEEMS TO BE THEIR PROBLEM,NOT THE MOVIE.I LIKED IT.ITS NOT THE BEST MARVEL MOVIE BUT IT NEVER WAS SUPPOSED TO BE.ITS A SOLID ADDITION TO THE UNIVERSE AS EXPECTED.BRIE WAS GOOD AS WELL AND THE KNOCKS ON HER PERFORMANCE ALL SEEM TO BE DWEEBS WHO COULDNT UNDERSTAND THE PLOT WELL ENOUGH TO JUDGE ANYTHING.
