...when he went into the future the only possible win he saw was when he actually gave up the stone willingly to save Stark's life.

Didn't think of that but yeah most probably.
I just thought it was pretty obvious Strange was going to save either Stark or Spiderman from death as soon as he said to them "he won't hesitate to let them die for the stone" or something like that beforehand. I was actually expecting Strange to say "Moral Compass" when Stark asked him why he gave up the stone for his life!

Well, the hint was at the very end when they were all disappearing Strange says to Stark, "I'm sorry but this was the only way."

Tony Stark is probably key to saving everyone from Thanos, so he had to live.

Doctor Strange gave up the stone because maybe he wants the world should be saved from Thanos. Tony Stark is probably planning some strategy against Thanos so that they all can save the world.

Technically, Doctor Strange should still be alive with the time stone. Remember he had already traveled forward in time through many possible futures including according to him the ("it was the only way") future they're in now. So his past self who traveled through the future should be still walking around what's left of the Avengers' present cause of Timey Wimey logic.
