I might be in the minority thinking The Escapees is his best (original title: Les Paumées du petit matin = "Lost Souls of the Early Morning"). Rollin himself hated it due to the script compromises. He didn't like all the dialogue and would've preferred a more silent approach like his earlier films. He buried it for years until it developed a small cult following. When Redemption approached him to remaster his catalogue he threw it in just to round things up, eventually softening up and admitting that it might not be that bad.

Who else thinks this movie is awesome? Definitely not a standard Rollin film, no vampires, supernatural creatures, buckets of blood & sex unless you count the last couple scenes. But that's exactly why I think it's great. It shows that when a Rollin story is stripped of these sensational elements it's really poetic and artistic. In an alternate world where Rollin did more films like this I bet he would be in league with Herzog (Woyzeck, Nosferatu) in the genre of surrealist realism. The junkyard strip club is so bizarre it's perfect. Acting and casting was great, not just the 2 leads but especially Louise Dhour as the benevolent Satan character, reprising her "Demoniacs" role but more fleshed out here. And who can overlook the highlight of the movie: that ice skating scene.
