"This is why frontier life is so difficult. Not because of the indians or the elements, but because of the idiots!"
Now normally I wouldn't have given such a line two thoughts, but I thought it was perfectly used in this movie because up until that scene I kept thinking about how foolish the actions of the rescue group were. Among others the idea of going in after an unknown number of indians (presumably a whole tribe) with just four people and out of the four one was injured badly and the other so elderly he would most likely be more of a hindrance than an asset. The whole thought of what I can only assume are experienced law men & gun fighters (Kurt Russell and Mathew Fox) taking the person with the bad fracture in the leg along in their posse when he would obviously just slow them down in a major way seemed quite preposterous. Then that line comes out of nowhere and kind of manages to put everything in perspective. In other movies you are just left to marvel at the stupidity of the actions taken by the character(s) and there is never any reason given for such behaviour, but in this movie I suppose you could say that everything makes sense after that line . Like the lady says the posse was in fact a group of imbeciles and idiots and their actions portray that quite well.
