I enjoyed this flick, didn't expect it to go the direction it did for a western but thought it worked well. Loved how relentless the tribe was (that crotch split down-the-middle kill was absolutely gnarly). Russell, Jenkins and Wilson were all great in their roles.

Yes, this was a fairly entertaining western for the most part. The addition of the horror element was a refreshing spin on the genre.
The crotch splitting scene is one of the few time that I have actually dropped my jaw in pure horror and shock.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS
After my first viewing, I didn't care much for it. It seemed so slow. But, after I got into the spirit of it; a horror western, I realized how well crafted it is. The director used the same technique that John Carpenter used in the original "Halloween". He drew out long, unimportant scenes to build up the tension. Then, BAM, the horror element hits you hard and fast. Very effective. The splitting scene was absolutely incredible. It gives me a shiver to think that the poor man's brain would likely have lived for a minute or two after the split. My only mcomplaint now is that the final showdown takes place off camera.

The slow buildup, IMO, is what makes it so awesome.
SPOILERS!!!!!
I love that they get their asses kicked by the tribe right away, and in an incredibly brutal manner. Because that's what was said would happen the entire film. And then it happens, although it turned out to be even gorier than I anticipated.
I thought this one was really refreshing. Enjoyed it a lot.

I've recently saw this overlooked little movie as I was pleasantly surprised by its style, pacing, atmosphere, acting. The fact that the (apparently) two weakest members of the team (the old man and the crippled husband) survive to the end makes it more gritty and enjoyable.

Absolutely loved this - one of the better recent Westerns. Although saying that, I do think the calibre of Westerns is on the up. Some really great ones in the last few years.

(spoilers)
I missed the split in half scene as it was cut from the movie when I saw it in theatre (was abroad at the time)... must have been pretty bad for the censors to go for it!

It is pretty rough. Here's a link to the scene on YouTube.

Wow... I didn't realise it was that silly! (albeit, still very graphic...)

Forgive me. How is it silly?

The way he gives a justification for why they kill as he is under their knife and the way they rip him in two... Would require a few more hits as he is human, not a salmon...
I thought it wouldn't have had that little conversation and that splitting him in two would look more realistic, as the rest of the violence was...
But I might be overly harsh because I'm watching this out of context and in the flow of the movie...

Just my opinion, but I think picking it apart is your way of dealing with how shocking it is. It looked plenty realistic to me. Just how many times in real life have you actually seen a man being split at the crotch?

I'm sure my reaction would have been different had I seen the scene in cinema, as I was watching the movie, in context with the sense of dread, rather than as a youtube clip, on my tablet, in my gym...
I'm not nit picking... You asked me what was it that I found silly in reponse to my reaction of it being silly but grusome... I don't usually break down scenes in that way... I haven't seen a man ripped in half, but we've all been to a butchers at least, or maybe have seen an animal being dressed after slaughter... You don't just tap it between the legs and pull it apart like splitting a banana before adding ice cream.... There is bone, and tendon and meat and such...
Anyway, we don't have to agree that it is silly...

An entertaining movie, to be sure. I liked Matthew Fox as John Brooder, and the rest of the acting was satisfactory to me.
