Surprising that neither of the eligible Best Picture contenders - The Shape of Water or Dunkirk - made the final five. I would predict (and hope for) Blade Runner 2049 to win here, but would not count out Star Wars or Planet of the Apes.
The Planet of the Apes effects were astounding... The Apes were photorealistic for the most part...
Agree, but sometimes Best Picture pull is enough to swing a nomination for a film that otherwise would be unlikely to compete in the category (The Revenant, for example, only, really, had the bear scene). I thought Dunkirk's overall tech strength might squeak it in.
Also agree on Planet of the Apes - although I found it the weakest film of the trilogy, the effects were superb.
@rudely_murray I know what you mean, but I think Dunkirk has a good chance of snatching the cinematography Oscar away from Blade Runner 2049... I can't see any of the others winning it...
@Renovatio - I completely agree, but I hope Deakins takes this. Dunkirk was crisply shot but, really, it's most impressive achievements are in other departments.
The Shape of Water, which hasn't opened yet where I am, is being picked as a possibility in some circles. Del Toro's films do always look ravishing and it may simply suck up a number of technical Oscars as the most heavily nominated movie on the ballot.
And there's a path - however slim - for Rachel Morrison to win for Mudbound, who would make history as the first ever female winner (and, indeed, nominee) in the category.
I do feel we have a real race for the Cinematography Oscar. Indeed, with the acting awards more or less sewn up, most of this year's suspense may lie in below the line categories.
Would have liked for Deakins to have won for The Assasination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford... It'll be interesting to see who wins... I can see people giving it to Morrison, if Blade runner and Dunkirk split their "big movie" vote...

Dunkirk didn't have many visual effects...

I'll be rooting for Kong, but given that list of nominees...tough sell!

Regarding Roger Deakins, he was nominated for Skyfall and I was hoping he would win, because the film cinematography in that movie was gorgeous!
