Wings is the first Academy Award "Best Picture" and "Best Effects" winner.
While I'm not wowed by the first thirty or so minutes of this film, which is pretty lightweight, it's all systems go from around that point onward. Before long, the dramatically powerful wartime and aerial fighting sequences, and compelling battlefield combat scenes, way more than make up for any earlier flimsiness, and are a total and major WOW all the way!
I rate this movie 9 out of possible max of 10. The seemingly literally death-defying aerial and battlefield sequences and very impressive stunts are ultra-impressive, as is much of the acting once things get going full tilt. This, ultimately, is a very strong, extremely well done film. It's definitely fully deserving of the two Academy Awards that it won.
The gorgeous restoration is a true visual treat to behold. Audio wise, so is the re-recorded edited original score. This is one of those movies that if you give up on it early on, you truly will miss out; it absolutely is worthwhile viewing. It steadily picks up power and irresistibleness as it goes.
FYI: If you've never seen this movie, be sure to check out the exciting trailer video that can be accessed from the bottom of this film's TMDb feature page. There's also some related other good Wings clips and special features there.

The trailer looks good. I searched online to see if I could find a copy, I was very surprised that I did

I think you'd enjoy this film. Once it gets seriously going, it's thoroughly riveting.

My son would love this. He's into early cinema. At the moment he's going through all the Hitchcock movies, from his first onwards. His goal is to write movie reviews, which he does pretty well anyway. Unusual for a 29 year old. He writes all his reviews on Letterboxd. He's done just over 3000. I asked him to join here, but he said he'd be a lurker (he's shy lol)

That's awesome - and is a lot of reviews!
As for Hitchcock movies, I've not personally watched all of them (but probably have most of them), but years ago did watch all of his Silent through England-era produced ones, of the years before Hitch moved to Hollywood.

Incidentally, at the time this movie was made and released, co-star Clara Bow was the #1 star anywhere in the world.

I love it. Not without it's faults, (pacing, 1920s cars and fashions) but watching Buddy Rogers fly the plane himself with minimal training can impress audiences in a way Flyboys and the other CG fests never will.

The aerial and warfare parts, as well as much of the drama, easily continue to hold up and to impress.

Right, impressive classic.
And even if fighting over biplanes is not your cup of tea, what a great cast of familiar talents has Wings...

I absolutely loved it. It was the first silent movie I've watched. Totally enthralling and you can't be distracted in case you miss something It made me cry too. I thoroughly recommend it.
