I love lots of films from this era (and before), but this just seemed a rather average film from a director with little else of apparent quality in his resume. So I would argue it is simply not a particularly good film.
There was no tension between Johnny's membership in the club and his seeming affection for the lass. The film barely hinted at any desire for Johnny to grow up and settle down. Perhaps the tension wasn't even there and it was as superficial as Johnny wanting to roll in the hay with just another girl?
the theme of the lass and Johnny both having a dissatisfaction with modern society wasnt really fleshed out. He doesn't like authority and she is a little bored in a small town, but the short runtime meant this was all a bit undercooked. She looked happy enough at the start of the film, with no sign of tedium.
no apparent explanation of the relationship between The Beetles and BRMC. I'd have thought understanding why Johnny left one to seemingly form the other would have been key in understanding his character, but it isn't explored.
In short, a film as driftless as the two leads, held together by some decent acting.
