I am a huge fan of the Fraser trilogy, but if you disregard that Trilogy and watch this as a stand-alone - it works really well. Cruise being the only problem with the flick, really. I don't know.. he's over-exposed maybe. I just don't care much for him as an actor. Crowe did extremely well with the material he was given. Not sure why this has been hammered as much as it has been. Maybe a 6.5/7 out of 10 for me. On its own, it works.

Always help to watch with super low expectations hehe me too like i love Brendan Fraser's Mummy (1st one especially, not including 3rd one). I thought from the poster or some scenes I have seen from the trailer that this film will be serious & dark. So I was like wtf when (SPOILER!!)...................................................... the dead friend started appearing. Made me wonder also I always thought Crowe & Cruise were kinda same in age but here Russell looks like at least more than 10 years older than Tom like not just appearance but character.
Is this supposed to be a remake or reboot or sequel? Or just share the same title? Only similarity was the tale of having a troublemaker egyptian of high status from the past not finish the ceremony and be mummified alive then be brought to life in present time. Fun movie to watch, not so horrible.

I figure it's a stand-alone movie within the same overall context and franchise. It doesn't feel like a reboot, since they didn't retcon anything from the previous ones.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this after reading some of the reviews. It was a lot of fun and I'm totally down for this 'Dark Universe'....
