I went to see The Mummy on opening day and I wasn't excited. I love the Brendan Fraser incarnation and the trailers for this Dark Universe didn't instil confidence. So maybe my expectations were so low that I enjoyed it. It's your average blockbuster, no better or worse than half the Marvel movies, all the DCEU (arguably *better * than all of them) and sure, it isn't perfect but it definitely isn't as bad as Dracula Untold, itself packing a RT score to 23%, strangely higher than The Mummy's absurdly low 17%. It's better than any of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels and even they more than double its score. Have people forgotten how to have fun at the movies?

People are too damn uptight nowadays. If i see a film that interests me, I watch it. I enjoyed The Mummy quite a bit. Was it flawed? Yes. But, it was still an enjoyable action-horror-adventure film. I think the film's biggest problem (besides the dumb comic relief sidekick) is the casting of Tom Cruise in the film. It just seemed like Cruise was playing a cinematic version of himself. I can think of countless actors who could have made the film better than Cruise. That said, Ahmanet was done fantastically. Sofia Boutella is easily best-in-show.

Yeah, Tom Cruise has been the same in pretty much everything since Mission Impossible. I really like Russel Crowe, thought he was great, so was Sofia.

I usually skip these kinds of movies, but might check it out because of Cruise and to be honest, Sofia Boutella isn't exactly hard to look at ;)

There is indeed a reference. Haven't heard anything about them being in the same universe but Fraser's was set in the 30's so I wouldn't be surprised.

I think people are tired of Tom Cruise. He seems to be in every blockbuster these days...

I'll wait for Netflix or Redbox. Just not that interested in this Monster Mash Universe.

Yeah... I'm a bit fatigued by the CGI fests... I suppose I'll catch it later as well...

I too was one of those whom were turned off by the previews. But I usually like Cruise films so I gave it a shot. Totally agree with OP. While not a perfect movie, it was pretty good. I'm shocked by RT's 17% and TMDB's 50%. I give it 7.5/10
Funny how many complain that it doesn't know what kind of movie it is when they don't say that about the majority of movies out now that do the exact same thing.

I liked Tom Cruise and Russel Crowe together. The love interest was boring. The villainess was just okay. Jake Johnson was a fun sidekick.
I would just get rid of the love interest and have more scenes with Cruise and Crowe.

I didn't hate it. It was far from great though. I personally didn't think it was any better than Wonder Woman. I'm not surprised it flopped in the US though. This was definitely a very over seas appealing movie.

I agree about the love interest. She was definitely a weak link. Personally, I really liked the villainess. Crowe was good, but I didn't feel the need to see anymore of him. Jake Johnson was good.

I heard the ancient Eyptian parts were great and the monster mummy was quite freaky. Other things suffer like the modern day scenes and special effects.

I liked the way they handled Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It was much better than turning him into a CGI Hulk like they did in Van Helsing and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
