Discuss Tucker: The Man and His Dream

with the tale of opposition to innovation and disruption of markets with EVs and self driving (as seen in the modern day with Tesla not being granted US government subsidies for EVs because they aren't subsidised and paid for misinformation on all things EV in the media). Especially with the poster of Mr Tesla having such a prominent place. But the film was made in 1988!

My favourite bit of opposition comes from Japan though. Toyota sell more combustion engines than anyone else in the world, and even falsely label some of them 'hybrids', when you can't plug them in to charge them. Their ploy is to pretend other clewn alternatives to EVs exist, without ever actually producing a non-polluting car to back up their claim. Last month they actually released their first full EV but refuse to sell it to customers because they say customers aren't confident in such a purchase yet . Despite in March 2022 11% of all car sales globally being full EVs. Instead they lease it to allay concerns over battery life and resale value. Nissan had this policy 10 years ago with their Leafs but dropped it about 5 years ago because the batteries were pretty much bullet proof (especially in comparison to combustion engines) and EVs depreciating far, far more slowly than mainstream combustion engine cars. So Toyota are essentially realising a full EV in an effort to undermine EVs. That's some dedication to the status quo.

Anyway, the modern parallels in the car industry made this a very enjoyable watch despite a far too neat 'final speech' which Coppola nd Lucas should have known better than to include.
