Warning Spoilers ahead...
I'm assuming if there is a 4th film they will bring Andy Serkis back to play an adult version of Caesar's youngest son. I doubt they are going to want to lose him as an actor even though Caesar died at the end of War.

He could probably pull it off. Gollum is completely different from Caesar.

This movie has already dropped to 5th place at the box office and it hasn't even cracked 150 million worldwide yet. I think this will be the lowest grossing of the trilogy so it's not likely a 4th will happen. I think the decision to go with a slow burn western type feel hurt the movie. Those kind of movies do better in the autumn/winter. The second film moved at a much faster pace and made 711 million worldwide.

The 4th movie could be like the original 'Planet of the Apes' where a spaceship in the present time is launched with people ending up on the 'Planet of the apes' and realize at the end that they had made a timetrip into the future to our own planet.
But, not to retread the original, it could be told from the point of view of the apes. After Ceasar's death, there could have been a struggle for power, were the biggest and strongest ape takes over the reign. And Cornelius being sidetracked. One day, the apes see a spacecraft falling down from the skies. In it, they find... humans.

When I saw this as part of the 'summer blockbuster lineup' I had expectations of something epic. And the title, "War for the planet of the Apes" sounds quite intense. This was more like "standoff of the planet of the apes". I didn't like the lack of speech throughout, and the necessity of reading subtitles. Harrelson is a good actor but he's also not young. I think they should have thrown in more humans of different ages and different appeals. I don't find Cesar that intriguing to carry an entire movie.

Totally, was more about forced construction work, while someone else is fighting a battle for some evil lair. Not quite as epic as the title would have us believe. In fact the beginning text explaining the situation seem not to agree too well with the rest of the movie. When I think about it, the story sort of indicated that the true epics was a war between men of different ideas... the apes were bystanders if anything really.

I thought apes were ,want to be hellishly conquering and enslaving mankind. But the villain in this was a disease essentially.

The war wasn't some typical APES VS HUMANS like some would expect (especially after how Dawn ended), but a war for the survival of the apes. I'm definitely fine with this.

I agree. It was not. So why call it War? Be honest and real and call it "Survival on the Planet of The Apes". Or "Stay under the Radar and Let the Others Fight it Out for Planet of The Apes".
Make a poster not showing a showdown between Man and Ape (something that did not happen), in the trailers show how they fought for survival in the midst of a human conflict etc and do not make it look like a movie about guerrilla warfare (no pun intended)..... I am fine with how the story is too, in principle. My biff is false advertising and more importantly that this was the final chapter before "Planet of the Apes (1968)". And in being so, is did not deliver what we have been waiting for since.... well, 1968. Yes, the final 10 minutes indeed but everything up until felt more like a "Two" than a "Conclusion".
Really the story was more a kin to a TV movie. Dont you think?
If the movie instead had given us what the poster actually showed us, what the trailers painted to us and not least what the title and its role as the final chapter demanded… then we would be singing in praise.... now I cry to the producers; "You maniacs! You blew it up! God, damn you! Damn you all to hell!!!"
In short, it is a cool sequel and for that I enjoyed it..... it is Not a cool final.

I think they told the story that they wanted to tell just fine, I didn't think that I'd enjoy this film as much as I did but the only way to go from now on is to basically retread the original films. And the way they told the film was pretty original and entertaining if not even somewhat believable - especially in this day and age considering the impact bird flu had on several countries. I'm not saying birds are going to be taking over or anything like that, but the main point (in this film series) is what allowed the apes to take over was a virus that spread among humans and humanity basically fighting each other despite their dwindling numbers.
Kind of like with all apocalyptic stories, there's always going to be vacuum's of power that someone will try and fill in.

I was thinking of something very similar. Have a spacecraft from our late 60s, early 70s which was lost in space only to land on a future earth. I would like it to be quite a bit further into the future where the ape society has advance more technolically then the original 60s films, more like what the original book described. Caesar would be a distant worshipped “Lawgiver” and we could have a Cornelius who was simply named after a long line of descendants. This would open the story to continue as it did in the 60s series.

I highly doubt there'll be a fourth film. This was an ending to the Planet of Apes trilogy. If there's going to be another film...or a reboot, it wont be for another decade or so.

it's a series, just like the comic book movies... basically a TV show, but with massive budget made for the big screen... but still a serial... of course they'll tack on another few "episodes"...

Without the humans to have conflict with. I have no idea were they can take it. I guess they could set it 20 years in the future with focus on Cornelius . Or could just do another remake of the original Planet of the Apes. But that did work out so well the last time. It would be interesting if they did one more based on the original book. In which the Apes were actually more advance then human, technology wise . But in the 60's they couldn't afford that. So they set it in a 1800's like society.
