Discuss War for the Planet of the Apes

Warning Spoilers ahead...

I'm assuming if there is a 4th film they will bring Andy Serkis back to play an adult version of Caesar's youngest son. I doubt they are going to want to lose him as an actor even though Caesar died at the end of War.

Without the humans to have conflict with. I have no idea were they can take it. I guess they could set it 20 years in the future with focus on Cornelius . Or could just do another remake of the original Planet of the Apes. But that did work out so well the last time. It would if they did a very more based on the original book. In which the Apes were actually more advance then human, technology wise . But in the 60's they couldn't afford that. So they set it in a 1800's like society.

Good point. What is left to tell really? And the original was part great because of the time it was made in. I recently watched all the originals over a week or so and was sort of surprised to see how shallow and spoon feeding the original really was. I have great memories and high respect for it, but I gotta say it does not hold any more. Doubt very much millennials would get the same kick we got.. so a more true adaptation of the book is not a bad idea. To my knowledge the big twist from the movie was not in the book and since this twist is hard to imagine done well for today's audience, the original book might just be what we have all been waiting for? Interesting. your post sparked new hope in me...

My thoughts exactly from page 1 of this thread. The future, like in the book, would open the door for a few more. I liked that these current films gave us an origin story.

I just went back and watched the first film and caught a few things I hadn’t before. When Franco goes back to checkup on Caesar in the caged compound Brian Cox’s character is listening to the news and you can hear about an in flight expedition to Mars that’s going to take months to get there. Then later on when the apes are swinging through the trees down a neighborhood there’s a paper boy that throws out the paper which has a headline, Lost In Space. Both are extremely brief. This could easily be the plot for the astronauts who go through a time warp only to come back to earth 1000s of years into the future to find a very advanced planet of apes.

This is not a reboot of the classic kind, they are prequels to the original sseries from the 60'ies and 70'ies. And the original series all started by what you mention above... so, indeed it could and possibly will be about this lost space ship in the next installment. But given the nature of these prequels as not being actual reboots, those paper clippings you mention etc is in my view more just connecting these two series together rather beautifully, the end. But who knows, se shall see...

Yes I’m aware of all the originals, I saw them all in theater upon release. I owned them on VHS and now DVD. I was REALLY happy that these new ones were origin films, but I couldn’t help hoping they’d give us at least one more like the 68 film but far more advanced. Showing how far the apes advanced into the future with today’s 3D affects would be great. My DVD set has a 6th film called Behind the POTA which is a 93 documentary with Roddy as host. They talk about settling on a more primitive ape city because they didn’t have the budget to show otherwise. The concept art for the original idea was cool.

Yes, If they would revisit the original from 68, it would be cool and I think still interesting if they would adapt the novel with a higher degree of verbatim than the original movie. The novel have the apes much more advanced as you mention etc. and the novel, to my knowledge, does not have the earth-twist as any pivotal part. Something that worked marvelously well back in 68 but just wouldn’t fly to day and after the fact of all these movies....anywho, we have to wait and see :)

Ps: kind of envious that you experienced the originals in the cinema darkness. What a mind blow it must have been...

The very first one I saw in a huge drive-in in Dallas TX with my parents. I was mesmerized by the movie and when that ending reveal happened you could hear the gasp as one loud noise, it was chilling. Heston was already one of my favorite actors after seeing him on TV in Ben Hur. Omega Man and Soylent Green just solidified it. The other four POTA films i did see in theaters and yes it was great.

Last week I bought the new 3 films on iTunes and after my 18 year old grandson stayed the weekend and watched them he asked if i still had the old ones on DVD. He proceeded to bing watch all 5 films while i was working. He hadn’t seen them since we watched them when he was around 6 or 7.

I was so hooked on the films i tried to recreate the face prosthetic. I made a plaster cast of my best friends face, and on top of that I sculpted in plastsine clay the ape eyebrows, nose, upper lip as one piece and the lower lip as another just like i’d seen in a making of magazine. Then plaster casted the other half of the mold onto that. Separated and removed the clay. I bought liquid rubber from the local hobby store and tried my hardest to figure out how to make foam rubber from it but just could not, (wrong product). The end product was amazing but was just to heavy as solid rubber. It fit him perfectly and look great, we did take pictures but who knows where those ended up. I was always creating something as a kid, which is probably why I’m a DIYer. My mom did have some old Super 8 films of that era i made converted to DVDs awhile back that i posted to YouTube. It’s a bunch of short ideas and is hilarious.

Thank you for sharing. Interesting read :)

in the original series, Cornelius explained how apes started talking by stating one ape responded by saying a word that was drilled into him time and again. that word being, "no". BUT if we take into account the whole series, it leads us to believe that space travel is the explanation for apes to eventually dominate the planet. for if the spaceship that originally crashed in that time period it wouldn't have been able to transport Cornelius back to 1972. so in fact Cornelius actually becomes his own great ancestor. now with the reboot of the series a totally new origin to the apes acquiring their intelligence, the idea of any space travel was not yet portrayed and if none was used by the "Rise", i doubt the simian flu would have allowed the exposed humans to plan an escape from the planet so time travel may very well NOT apply. i do imagine some humans may decide to use underground facilities to survive for a while and need to resurface in need of resources. so if we are to witness another episode of this series, i think it will need to address the evolution of the communities of apes & gorillas as they have come into contact with 'Caesar's' community. Cornelius was too young to take leadership after the passing of Caesar and there would definitely be challenges for leadership until Cornelius is old enough to vie for that honor, unless the rest of the community addressed the issue with a counsel and appointed a lawgiver. the humans, i would imagine would continue to decline with the threat of the simian flu and exposure to more ape and gorilla communities.
