I thought he tried to kill Willard, but anyway...I believe the Chief was angry at his superiors and Willard for sending/taking him on what he felt was a suicide mission. He possibly didn't know that it would be that. And then, he got mortally wounded so that was probably just enough incentive for him to try to take Willard out as well.
