Why did the Chief try to kill Marlow?

What was the reason why the Chief, after being impaled with a spear, try to kill Marlow as well?

Because he was in love with him. It's complicated.

I thought he tried to kill Willard, but anyway...I believe the Chief was angry at his superiors and Willard for sending/taking him on what he felt was a suicide mission. He possibly didn't know that it would be that. And then, he got mortally wounded so that was probably just enough incentive for him to try to take Willard out as well.
