So eventually one of them died, very likely a good while before the other unless they had a suicide pact. Why didn't the surviving one go inside the chamber so they could at last make it to the colony? We're left to assume the survivor ended their days alone again once the first one died.

What happened at the end was one of the biggest wastes of having Andy Garcia in your movie imaginable. Also a feeling of seeing one of the most classic cases of Hollywood excess with absolutely no substance.
