He had a VIP membership.. and also sex-bots. Perhaps there was a reason Arthur was only functional from the waist up?

Actually, he didn't have a VIP membership. He was accepted as someone who had a skill that would be useful at the colony but he wasn't considered worthy of VIP treatment.

Definitely wouldn't have woken anyone up... he didn't seem like a deep thinker/feeler or someone who wanted anything beyond basic level needs. Typical boy-man character, just a bit more elaborated on because the movie doesn't have many characters.

I think his main concern was boredom and physical needs. If he was getting sexually fulfilled by robots, had varied food and was entertained that would be enough for him. It didn't seem like he wanted or knew what real intimacy or human connection were before waking Aurora up.

His character seemed almost virginal.

He was lucky not to be a VIP. Otherwise would have eventually died alone in an emotionally stunted stated having spent his entire life being distracted by toys and entertainment.

sorry... got a bit dark there for a moment...hahaha

You misread the OP. The first sentence in the post is a continuation of the title. So the question was "If he had..."

I think Jim had to be a spoiled, pampered little soul because a ship that size with so many things on it would not drive you potty in just a single year. One of Tom Hanks' characters spent about 6 years on a desert island with only a basketball for company, if that had been Jim he would have fashioned a sex doll out of sand and bits of sea creature inside the first 10 days. That ship was luxurious compared to a damp, windy island.

If you offered Tom Hanks' character a 3D version of Dance Dance Revolution he probably would have broke down and cried with excitement like a 4 year old on Christmas day! Jim had it easy I tell thee!

If push came to shove you could take some folks out of their pods without waking them up and hold a tea party or stage a really slow game of tennis or something.

I don't remember any sex-bots, but maybe you're joking and I don't get it. Back to the question if Jim could've lasted a lot longer without human contact. OP-I recently read a story about a guy who wanted to be alone, so he went into the woods of Maine for 27 years! He was surviving by raiding vacation cabins for food. That's how he got caught 2 years ago.

Back to the movie. In the Maine case, that guy REALLY WANTED to be alone. I think that Jim knew awaking Aurora was wrong, but he was starting to die of loneliness.

Sounds like reality for some people...

Arthur still had a mouth and 2 very very fast and agile hands if you get what I mean 😉

He aldo enjoyed to reprogram the cleaning bots so I'm sure he could have lut their suction power to some personal use.

Yes. Unfortunately it does.

But Hank's character was also consumed with the work of basic survival, which would have filled much of his time. Also he was alone for what, about five years? & even at that he apparently came close to doing what Jim nearly did. Also he might have had hope that he would eventually be found & reunited with civilization. Jim had no such hope. He knew he would either die alone or wake another passenger. The scenarios just aren't that similar.

I find this interpretation interesting because I didn't get that vibe at all from the film. I felt much more it was the longing for human companionship rather than simply sex. I think we see this demonstrated somewhat with his frustration with the limitations of relationship with the almost-human bartender bot. He wanted...needed?...a real person to stay sane.

Once that is established as his greatest need (human companionship) it is certainly fair to say he picked her because he might have a more "fulfilling" relationship with her than with others. I think we see confirmation of this again when the captain wakes up and they both get excited...to--once again--not to be "alone" (the only two awake) and to maybe get more help or a plan!

I agree with you there. Also, if I remember correctly, he read some of her writing, and was so impressed by it that it lead to his decision to wake her up.

I think he was rationalising it to himself, and the viewer, to make what he did less creepy for himself and more palatable for the audience...

The guy wanted sex... that's why he went for Aurora, rather than a less attractive woman, or a man... Nothing earlier in the movie suggests that he has any deeper or higher level needs. It's all physical, e.g. more varied food, better living conditions, etc... or the boredom of being under-stimulated...

In the hypothetical scenario, if he had VIP membership and sex robots I doubt he would have even thought to wake anyone up...

You have a point, but look at it this way: If you were in his situation and you had a chance to wake up Jennifer Lawrence (even if was unethical to do so) wouldn't you do it? Maybe Chris felt that he could get through his situation better with a human than a sex-bot.

I am not Jim. We're talking about what Jim would do...

I wouldn't do the creepy stalking research that he did before waking her up... so invasive and really spoils relating to someone new... If he wanted human connection then why do that? Why not wake her up and find out what she's like, get to actually know one another...

That's not what he wanted. He wanted to get laid, chose the kind of girl he couldn't usually get and did stalker research to stack the odds in his favour even though he had zero competition... literally the only man alive!

That's predatory behaviour by someone who wants sex, not the behaviour of someone who yearns for human connection...

Sorry, don't see it that way at all. He had one chance to get it right. Suppose he wakes someone with whom he turns out not to have any affinity for whatever ... what then?

Matter of fact he didn't do enough research, or he might have discovered her round trip fare, making her a poor choice to face a lifetime just on the ship.

& no, you're not Jim. Neither am I. But how can we judge another's actions without putting ourselves in his or her place to the best of our ability?

Finally, if he just wanted to get laid, surely there were sex workers among the 5000, a total necessity for a new colony.
