It is 1971 in Limousin, France. Delphine, who lives on a farm, hears from her girlfriend that she is getting married. Heartbroken, Delphine leaves for Paris to study. There she meets Carole, a teacher, who belongs to the MLF (Mouvement de libération des femmes), a group of female students from the Sorbonne. She helps them free a male friend from a mental hospital, where he has been locked up against his will. There he is being treated with electroconvulsive therapy to cure him from his homosexuality.

Soon Carole falls in love with Delphine and she breaks up with her boyfriend Manuel.

When Delphine hears that her father has had a stroke, she returns home to help her mother run the farm. Carole follows her there, but their romantic relationship has to be kept secret from everyone. Delphine's mother Monique wants her daughter to marry Antoine.

One morning Monique walks into the bedroom and sees Delphine and Carole in bed together. She leaves without saying a word. Delpine quickly puts on some clothes.

Later Monique accuses Carole of having seduced her daughter and chases her away. Carole decides to leave and asks Delphine to come with her. At first, Delphine agrees, but at the train station she cannot muster the strength to go with Carole and she stays behind.

Five years later, in 1976, Carole receives a letter from Delphine, who writes that she has finally found the strength and courage to leave her home in Limousin. She regrets that she hasn't done so earlier with Carole and she knows that it is too late for them now. The past is behind her and Delphine looks forward to the future and a new life.
