Did Batman really need a suit of armour?

He rarely gets shot or stabbed and always seems to evade gunfire. He could've easily had a cloth suit with a leather cowl, if needed protection he would have armour around his chest and shoulders like a real life Kevlar vest.

Cloth looks retarded on film, it would be impossible to take a Batman in a cloth suit seriously example the Adam West Batman series.
