It was 1999, before Y2K, the beginning of the internet revolution and social media and there were no smartphones. Three students armed with only a camera get lost in the woods. The horror they encounter will haunt viewers all over the world for years to come. After that everything changed and the new millennium was ushered in. Then, realization sets in: nothing will ever be the same again scream

Love that response! It so true. Nothing has been the same since The Blair Witch Project...horror movie wise anyway. Think of all the found footage movies that TBWP allowed to be ushered in...it might not have been the first found footage movie...but it IS the movie that put it on the map!

Yes, another IMDB refugee here. This film is my favourite horror of all time. Ever since I saw it at the cinema upon it's release in 1999 I've never looked at horror movies the same since.

We are all probably from IMDB lol. But yes, this film scared me as a teen. I wouldn't go in the woods for quite some time afterward. I actually though it was real when it first came out grinning .

I remember watching this in the theater when it came out and it actually scared me big time, although there were people all around me. Kicked off the found footage craze, which we know by now was not a good thing. lol

Still a great movie and somewhat of a milestone for horror cinema.

Just watched the new "Blair Witch" a couple of days ago and it was more than disappointing.Full of jumpscares where the first one had none. Stupid cliched characters whereas in the first one they felt real. Inconsequent use of found footage, showing too much etc etc...

Over here in Europe, we had the misfortune of knowing beforehand it was not real 'found footage' when the movie was screened over here . Too bad. Nevertheless, I really liked it. The eerie realisation of the main characters that, after a full day walking, they ended up at the same spot they had left that morning... scream

It's weird, at the time I never fell for the marketing and believed it was real. It just thought it was a really good marketing ploy, was not disappointed by that, and loved the movie anyways.

I feel like we all know someone who thought it was real. Being a horror fan, I knew ahead of time it was a "work", but still loved the clever hype and over all feeling that you seeing something that hadn't been done before on such a large scale. And yes, former IMDb guy.

I think...if I recall correctly there were about 2 days before I saw it that I thought it was real. Then word began to spread that it was all a marketing story behind the film and it was brilliant...it truly was.

I'm glad you're all finding your way over here. I LOVE this movie!

'99 was a great year for movies, too. Another favorite of that year was The Minus Man. I remember hanging out a local Newbury Comics at the time and seeing the "missing" posters for Josh, etc, so I had an idea it was a set-up. Still, though, after showing it to a friend (on Christmas, no less) he later asked me if anyone got caught. While I'm proud to say I've seen many "classics" in the theaters (I'm close to 50), this was one experience I'll never forget. The finale' when the remaining cast met their fate was just amazing.

IMDb trash, reporting for roll call 🤓

lol! Yep...I think everyone is finding their way here gradually.

Still the best shaky cam movie out there.

First film I ever pirated off the internet along with american pie. Knew nothing about it, wasn't entirely sure if it was real at the time grin

Hello there! I'm also from IMDb. My username there was met1981sf, the one with the picture of a stick figure as avatar, and I was a frequent poster on TBWP forums. On my last post there, I invited users to migrate to TMDb, hope someone has read that. I'm also a member a of the Blair Witch Boards, my username there is also ksio89. You won't believe how much amazing content that discussion board has, it's unbelievable, really worth a visit! Hope both TMDb and Blair With Boards grow after the shutdown of IMDb discussion boards.

I simply love TBWP, it's my favourite horror and found footage movie. The Blair Witch Project is a textbook case of how to make a movie in which what you don't see is much scarier that what you do, instigating the viewer's imagination, that's the key of making a successful horror movie. There are no cheap jump scares, no gore, no stupid teens, no happy ending, no antagonist showing onscreen, you have absolutely not a single negative element of modern mainstream horror movies.

On the other hand, you have a minimalist, atmospheric and incredibly eerie movie with extremely rich mythology backing the storyline, great acting, direction, and probably the most important element of TBWP, the way it was marketed. I'd say the brilliant promotion, in the dawn of the internet and way before the success of found footage horror movies in the 2000s, is what made TBWP so notable. Very few movies had so much hype as this one. Don't take me wrong, this movie is a masterpiece by its own merit, but it wouldn't have the same impact without the infamous advertisement it had. It's like the marketing ploy and the way the movie was created, as a real found footage film, made each other stronger. The way it was crafted, as a real documentary was, a stroke of genius from Myrick and Sánchez.

There are no cheap jump scares, no gore, no stupid teens, no happy ending, no antagonist showing onscreen, you have absolutely not a single negative element of modern mainstream horror movies.

Exactly! Great to see another fellow fan who sees the merit in this incredibly well done and timeless film.
