Aren't we basically in Dark City?
Do we really know what life was like before? I'm sure we have memories of what it was like, of our lives a year or so ago, but do we really know it anymore? Or is it just an artefact?
More broadly, do we even remember what it was like to be human beings? Are we living according to our nature anymore, or have we become the fungible, hive-mind automatons shown in the movie, or worse, the unconscious mass of humans with replaceable thoughts...

Yes, we're essentially biological robots living in a large goldfish bowl. We have a very finite existence in terms of what we can do, and even what we want or need to do. And as for "the beyond," consider that everything we know that isn't naturally occurring, was invented by mankind. That goes for religion, science, art, and even time itself. That said, I suspect I'll never stop looking for Shell Beach.

Ugh, why go into so much serious discussion over such a crap film? The Matrix did it all so much better a year or so later, with superior style, including the much-lauded "bullet time" effects. Blue pill, please.

@CelluloidFan Dark City seems worth considering at this time because we are at a point where many cannot remember what it was like to live normally due to events of 2020, which are ongoing and could be permanent...
Also, re-writing history is explicitly a thing in the Anglo-American regions at this time, which Dark City makes tangible in a way that few other movies do...
The Matrix, while it is a good movie, doesn't address any of this...
Also, Jennifer Connelly is a babe in this one...

That's cool... I really disliked the film greatly... I'm not going to argue opinions on the board. Cheers....

Why, specifically, did you dislike it? Honestly, I much prefer it to "The Matrix". Dark City had a much more psychological depth to it than the latter film, and a lot of very interesting concepts and questions. It is hands down one of my favorites. By the way, this is not an attempt to argue, I am simply interested.

I didn't like the movie when I first came across it... I found the cuts every couple of seconds jarring to watch casually, while working on my laptop... But when I sat down and immersed myself in the movie, you don't notice it anymore and it just adds to the feeling of disorientation of the main character...

Which was a big part of the key, though I think the original cut was definitely hurt by the changes forced on the film by the studio. The Directors Cut is a far better film. It actually feels very different, in an interesting way for me.

Meh, I'm actually OK with how things are now. I thought we were too touchy-feely before. People wanting to shake your hand all the time and even hug you even though they barely knew you. Yeah, the masks suck for a number of reasons and is what I hate the most about our new world but "it is what it is" to quote the Orange Baboon.

What does the directors cut do differently? Do you know what the changes were that the studio made?

There are several scenes that have been re-added, and one of the biggest changes that the studio made required the voice-over narration that explained everything that was going on before the movie even started. That is gone in the directors cut. The pacing feels a little slower, more deliberate.

Cool, It sounds better without the narration. I haven't seen the film in ages. Think I might check out the directors cut.
