how is this possible?!
this is a must-watch movie. i remember watching this. in my teens. made me want to grow up and play danergous games.
what really caught me was the adolescent thrill, set in such an adult world.
the main character, tried his best to be successful in order to insulate himself from the world through his wealth; to protect himself from the existential agnst and fear of his own mortality.
as a teen, it was thrilling to watch him confront his fear of the real world, to be stripped of all of his protective bariers and confront his demons
looking back at the movie, now, years later, as an adult, it seems more bitter-sweat. i can sense the life unlived, but at least he has a chance to taste that again

This was a well thought out story and beautifully made. I have always thought Douglas was a very good actor and he has an honesty in his performances and his approach to his craft which is a rarity these days. If I had a problem with the story it was that the 'reality' was always obvious. That and the idea that a guy worth 600 million could be so easily 'hacked'. But wtf, it's an adventure romp and a lot of fun.
Not sure I'd be hugging my brother at the big reveal either. LOL

Totally agree with all the above. The fun, the performance by Douglas and the commentary on wealth being used to artificially insulate yourself from harm and suffering (but creating a very sanitary life). I gave this a very rare 9/10 and couldn't believe a film of this quality starring Douglas and directed by the guy who did Seven (which I didnt rate, but was very popular) ended up being so comparatively overlooked.

Definitely an amazing movie. Director David Fincher was on a roll, had done Seven before this, and was on his way to doing Fight Club next. Michael Douglas at his best as well. This came out in 1997, just before the whole Internet, smart phone craze began so that was why it was so mind-blowing for some of us that saw it back in that day. The newer generation might have a harder time appreciating the film.

Among my favourites.
Fincher moves us along from scene to scene with beguiling fluidity.
In terms of story, it's sad, and I'm not entirely sold on the idea that Conrad should be the one giving life lessons to Nicolas, but I actually know firsthand that it's reasonable that the older brother would have been impacted by the defining life event of their father differently from the younger brother.
That said, it's also slick, sexy, scary, funny, gut-wrenching...a fun romp!
