In my book this was highly questionable subject matter for a film, but it got good ratings so I gave it a shot. If any of the following had taken place I'd have consider the film horrifically misjudged if it tried to inject 'entertainment' where none should be.
i) showing a flashback to the abduction or previous escape attempts
ii) any adult nudity
iii) any showing of the police hunt of Nick
As it was, I think the choice to have the film largely through the boy's eyes saved it. Nothing prior to his birth was relevant and when Nick left him he effectively ceased to exist.

Affirmative. I'm guessing the director was of a similar mindset to myself given they never indulged in the basic Hollywood quest for tits and tension.

Call it low expectations for Hollywood film standards. I cant remember the last Hollywood film involving serious criminals that didn't have a police chase or some cliched detective scene to keep the ADHD generation on board.
