I listened to an interview with Chris Columbus recently, and he mentioned Macaulay Culkin's performance in Uncle Buck and said he was the first kid they auditioned for Home Alone. They ended up auditioning a bunch of other kids just to be "fair", but in the end they went with their original choice of Macaulay.

My favorite scene was when Buck tells the mean principal (or whomever) to take the quarter and go downtown and find a rat to gnaw the mole off her face. My favorite John Candy movie.
