I love this movie. It's got heart and lots of laughs. It has all the ingredients of a good comedy. The 'fish out of water' (martin having to rough it), the 'two worlds collide' (they would never be friends in real life) and a deadline to meet (thanksgiving dinner). It sets this movie up as a compelling story.
There were a couple of 'blue' jokes, but unlike movies today, they were funny because they were funny, not funny as 'shock value' like most comedies rely on today.
I think the scene where Martin wants to leave the motel and unleashes all his frustrations on Candy is classic, and the follow up of "if you want to hurt me, go ahead, I'm an easy target" was probably Candy's best acting.
Great rewatchability.

Great scene! They both absolutely owned the emotions they're playing. I love how Candy beeps his horn back in anger.

I finally watched this in full for the first time and it definitely merits the plaudits. It's not nostalgia that makes it good, it's just a really solid, simple feelgood comedy that barring a couple of tantrums from Neal, avoids lazily hamming things up and mugging to the camera. I think it is one of the greatest titles for a film ever and the bittersweet ending is absolutely top notch.
7/10
