Marta Siemińska jest trzydziestoparoletnią kobietą, prowadzącą jednostajne życie zamknięte w schemacie powtarzających się czynności w pracy i w domu. Tę monotonię przełamuje częściowo działalnością w radzie zakładowej i opiekuńczymi ingerencjami w cudze sprawy. Podczas bilansu kwartalnego w księgowości zostają wykryte poważne nadużycia. Rozpoczyna się wewnętrzne śledztwo. Wkrótce przypadkowe spotkanie Marty z dawno niewidzianym kolegą ze studiów przywołuje wspomnienia i skłania ją do dokonania podobnego bilansu swego małżeństwa.

The main character is a bookkeeper, 40, who lives a quiet, uninteresting life with her husband and son of school age. She realizes that soon she won't be needed much at home as the boy grows up and the relationship with her husband crumbles. It's only when an embezzlement is discovered at the office and she stands up to her management, that she realizes life has more to offer. She meets a well-off former classmate, married to an American. Then she meets Jacek and starts contemplating possibilities of a new start. She discovers love for the first time, but turns to old ways rather than to break loose.

"Balance matrimonial" narra la historia de una mujer de poco más de 30 años, quien trabaja sólo unas horas como funcionaria, feliz, casada y con un hijo, que un día se siente atraída por cambiar de vida cotidiana: toma contacto fortuitamente con un antiguo compañero de gimnasio e intenta "liberarse" de sus obligaciones como madre y esposa.
