Discuss Point Break

I've watched this movie several times and I enjoy it for some strange reason, but damn is it a bad movie. The original was no masterpiece, but it blows this one out of the water.

I think the idea behind the remake was good, but it was very poorly executed. They tried to expand in too many directions and ended up with characters that made no sense. These guys were simultaneously: successful sponsored poly-athletes, world travelling playboys, Paris backalley fightclub members, eco-terrorists, nirvana seeking Buddhists, and violent bankrobbers. One minute they are having a peaceful hippie dinner at the base of a mountain and watching the landscape, and the next minute they are gunning down innocent policemen because its been an hour since their sponsor stopped sending money. The first movie was better because they kept it simple. Stoner surfers who like to surf all year long and get high, and rob banks to give themselves money to do so.

The Ozaki Eight barely made any sense either. It was a weird mix of bank robbing and random stunts performed in nature. Some of the guys participated in all of the Eight and some of them randomly sat out on some of the events. Some scenes made it sound like the intent was to get publicity and draw support to their eco-terrorism, some scenes made it sound like it was all about achieving nirvana, and some made it seem like the only point was to have fun wingsuiting down a mountain.

There was zero reason for the "underground" fight club. It seemed that the only reason they had to put it in the movie is because they first spent so much time portraying the criminals as effeminate eco hippies to the point that the viewer had trouble taking them seriously.

Speaking of their eco-friendliness. I'm not sure dumping a couple of tons of paper bills in a forest is doing all that much to help mother nature. Didn't they also crash a tanker? I'm sure the ocean is ecstatic and thinking "Thanks for all the free diesel boys!"

Two years later I'm back hating this film again!

I don't think they ever even define all of the milestones in the "Ozaki Eight", and judging from their behaviour it seemed like one of the steps was getting chlamydia from Samsara because everyone was or had been with her!
