Initially it seems to be all about André dominating the conversation as an enthralling story-teller and turning it into a near-monologue while Wally barely stands a chance to occasionally utter a word. Soon however, it develops into a vigorous philosophical discourse over what it actually means to live and to love.
Such a performance is extremely demanding on the actors. Fortunately, both of them are excellent here, so the result is anything but dull. It is also striking how relevant their discussion, filmed nearly forty years ago, remains today.
A number of other movies experimented with a similar format and failed, ending up being pretentious and boring. This one is nothing like that. Granted, it's best to watch it when you're in the right mood, and not everyone is going to like it anyway but all I can say is that it kept me plastered to the screen for its entire duration: I did not pause it even once, which is something I would commonly do with nearly every movie these days.
This is a dinner like no other, and one you won't forget.
