An elementary school in Japan begins an experimental program that frames the students' curriculum around one single project: the raising of a calf from adolescence to adulthood. Through their work with the calf, the students learn about math, biology, nutrition and numerous other subjects. But after multiple years of investing energy and emotion into their beloved pet, the students begin to realize that the final days of their project may provide them with the hardest and most important lesson of all.

Egy japán általános iskola bevezetett egy kísérleti programot, ahol a teljes tanulmányukat egyetlen projekt köré építik fel: fel kell nevelniük egy tehenet kisborjú korától a felnőttkorig. A borjúval való munkájukon keresztül tanulnak matematikát, biológiát, környezetismeretet és egyéb más területeken is hasznos tudásra tesznek szert. A kísérlet során azonban a tanulóknak végül rá kell döbbenniük arra, hogy valószínűleg a projekt utolsó napjai fogják majd a legnehezebb és legfontosabb leckét jelenteni számukra. (port.hu)

1991년에 방영된 ‘NONFIX’ 시리즈의 또 다른 작품. 나가노현 이나 초등학교 1학년 ‘봄’반 학생들은 수업 대신 한 마리의 아기 젖소를 길렀다. 9개월간 이어진 젖소 키우기는 여러 매체에 소개되어 화제가 되었다. 2년이 지난 시점에서 감독은 카메라를 들고 이나 초등학교를 찾아가고, 3년학년이 된 학생들은 다시 한번 아기 소 ‘로라’ 키우기에 도전한다. 그들의 하루는 로라를 돌보는 일로 시작하고 끝나고, 모든 수업은 소 키우기와 연결되어 있다. 사료 구입 비용을 계산하는 과정은 자연스럽게 산수 시간이 되고, 로라가 어떤 사료를 먹고 어떻게 임신하는지를 지켜보면서 아이들은 생물, 자연, 생식의 원리를 체득한다. 아역 연기 연출에 탁월한 고레에다의 장기가 유감없이 발휘된 작품.

O grande investimento do Japão na Educação após a Segunda Guerra Mundial trouxe um efeito colateral inesperado que começou a ficar evidente na década de 1970: a escola japonesa podia ser emocionalmente insuportável para algumas crianças; o país começou a registrar altos índices de suicídio infantil no início do ano letivo. Na década de 1980 começaram a aparecer escolas no país propostas a inverter a lógica meritocrática que dominava o sistema de ensino, e neste documentário conhecemos estudantes de uma pequena escola do interior que tem como objetivo para o ano escolar cuidarem de uma bezerra até sua primeira gestação, integrando os conteúdos escolares na rotina do manejo do animal.
