I always avoid "Oscar worthy" films, because I've been consistently disappointed by them.
Am I missing an enjoyable film, here?

Worth watching it to see J.K. Simmons play an asshole... and to watch Miles Teller take it!

It's deeper than most catch. The ending is actually a tragedy, not a triumph. It's a decent story. And, the kid apparently taught himself to play drums for this movie, which is pretty remarkable in itself.

Yes, you are definitely missing out. It's not what you would describe as "oscar worthy" at all. It's not one of those triumph over adversity films. It deals with the same kind of themes as Black Swan. But does them even better. It's more grounded. It was one of my fave films of 2014.
And J.K. Simmons is funny as hell. But frightening at the same time. See it for him if nothing else.
