... instead of giving the mind gem to Loki, he could have grabbed the Tesseract, and the film would have been over in five minutes.

i'm actually pretty bugged about retroactively making Loki's staff into one of the gems. i don't think Thanos would've surrendered even temporary possession to a subordinate like that.

I'm guessing that Thanos was concerned more with locating the Gems than getting them. He likely believed retrieving the gems once located was going to be child's play...which is likely a correct assumption.
Also, I don't think it was retroactive if you go by the T.H.A.N.O.S theory.
