Rarely does it work, A Few Good Men does a good job of it, you hear the same few notes many times throughout the film but it fits so well. Other times it's horrible, like Season 8 of Smallville and that breathy, ominous sound you'd hear several times each episode for the whole damn season.
I haven't seen this movie, but lazy soundtracks are my pet peeve so thanks for the warning. I'll stay away.
I can only think of 1 time where a "minimalist" soundtrack really worked and that's in "Werckmeister Harmonies" - a mostly music-less film which has 4 chords as its theme, but everyone who's seen it agrees it's one of the most hauntingly beautiful and appropriate soundtracks in cinema.
Other than that, I can name a zillion films that failed. It's a shame when an otherwise good flick is ruined by bad music. And refreshing when a bad/mediocre flick is made epic by an awesome soundtrack (example: "FLASH! Ah-ahhhhhhh" lol)
The Jacket also had a really repetitive piece in the score that I actually didn't mind because it was apropos even though every time I heard it, I thought, "damn that's repetitive."

I hate when composers do that shit.

It's lazy filmmaking & fails to take the audience into account. A repetitive theme is one thing, but the SAME sounds, ugh.
