While this is a solid seventies crime drama, anchored by a good Dustin Hoffman performance, I found it severely weakened by a distinct lack of chemistry between Hoffman and Theresa Russell. I generally like Russell very much as an actress but in this early role not only is she rather whiny and wooden, but she looks so young as to be more like Hoffman's daughter than love interest.
It's still worth a look, with a couple of memorable heist sequences and good roles for a number of great character actors - Gary Busy and Kathy Bates make an impression, while M. Emmett Walsh and Harry Dean Stanton are both wonderful here. 6/10

I recall it being a solid film, and some of the supporting performances as you mentioned are good -- but I don't remember this female character you're referring to.
