벤지는 동네를 떠돌아다니는 주인 없는 개지만 마을 사람들의 사랑을 받으며 바쁜 하루하루를 보낸다. 신디와 폴은 벤지를 특히 좋아해 함께 살기를 바라지만 아버지의 반대에 상심한다. 그러던 중 마을의 아무도 살지 않는 집에 몇 명의 일당이 꿍꿍이를 꾸미려 들어오게 된다. 이들은 몸값을 노리고 신디와 폴을 납치하게 된다. 하지만 영리한 벤지의 도움으로 둘은 풀려나게 되고, 아버지는 벤지를 새로운 가족으로 받아들이게 된다.

Benji raconte l'histoire d'un chien vivant dans une petite ville du Texas où il est traité en ami par beaucoup de personnes locales, l'appelant chacune par un nom différent. Il obtient alors de la nourriture et de l'attention à chaque fois qu'il rend visite à une de ses connaissances. Il rencontre Tiffany, une femelle dont il tombe amoureux. Lorsque les enfants du Dr. Chapman sont enlevés et retenus contre une rançon, Benji tente de les secourir et cherche des êtres humains amicaux pour l'aider à libérer les enfants.

Benji is a stray who has nonetheless worked his way into the hearts of a number of the townspeople, who give him food and attention whenever he stops by. His particular favorites are a pair of children who feed and play with him against the wishes of their parents. When the children are kidnapped, however, the parents and the police are at a loss to find them. Only Benji can track them down, but will he be in time? If he can save the day, he may just find the permanent home he's been longing for.
