I really liked how these topics were dealt with in a pretty mature and objective matter. Namely, that injecting heroin and having sex with different people can feel sensational, but ultimately isn't always the best sign of a well adjusted person.

It was a nice choice in a mainstream film to show a promiscuous woman (unapologetically so) as the protagonist given how commonplace it is for women like that to be viewed so negatively, most notably compared to male equivalents. In the end, as I saw written elsewhere, it is a story about an interesting, but not entirely likeable person. A breath of fresh air to see a three dimensional interpretation of a woman under 30 years old in an American film (rather than a love interest, a saint who is wronged by the world or a 'strong'woman).
