Cocker bracht eind 2012 zijn 22e studioalbum Fire It Up uit, waarop hij samenwerkte met een aantal hitschrijvers uit de jaren 80, waaronder Ray Parker Jr., Alan Frew van Glass Tiger en Graham Lyle.

Onder aanvoering van producer Matt Serletic werd het eindresultaat een solide popplaat.

De zanger ging vervolgens op pad met zijn nieuwe repertoire, op een tournee (waarbij ook Nederland weer aangedaan werd voor een concert) die gemakshalve vernoemd was naar het album. De daaruit voortvloeiende concertplaat heet dan ook simpelweg Fire It Up Live, geheel opgenomen in Keulen.
