Discuter de Fury

I'm quick enough to criticise western democracies hypocrisy when it comes to some of their military adventures, but this was bordering on absolutely disgusting in the way it attempted to portray life with the US military in WWIi. There is no doubt that there will have been isolated instances of inappropriate and disproportionate violence committed by soldiers of all nationalities. It is well known that, in terms of Europe at least, the Nazis considered the Slavs as sub-human and both Nazis and Soviet leadership had no concerns about 'decency', which led to the Eastern front being an atrocity filled disgrace.

In the western front those darling Nazis appeared to consider their foes sufficiently Arian to be afforded a more civilised response than their eastern foes, and the western allies were democratic nations with the rule of law firmly entrenched. They spent most of their time liberating allied territory (other than Italy, which isn't covered in the film) so would not have been hostile to the natives. But what we get here is:

  • a typist being sent to the front, seemingly by accident (incompetence)

  • a green recruit being threatened with murder if they didnt execute a non-SS enemy combatant. This done infront of dozens of men without being challenged (war crime with which everyone is complicit)

  • Pitt telling the green recruit that if he doesn't take the German girl of unspecified age to the bedroom and have intercourse / rape her then Pitt will (clearly implying a willingness on Pitt's part to commit rape, possibly of a minor)

  • a grotesquely unrealistic portrayal of a traumatised German girl of unspecified age seemingly immediately falling in love with an occupying soldier and consenting to intercourse after he has taken her into her bedroom at gunpoint.

  • American soldiers barging in on the dinner in the German lady's apartment and immediately making it clear that there is a woman downstairs that is being gang raped by US soldiers (but it's okay, because one of the soldiers recons she may be a 'whore' and earlier in the film its implied a woman us fair game if she is starving and will consent to intercourse if she is starving or likes cigarettes). They encourage Pitt to take part. (indicates war crimes have just taken place downstairs and that such behaviour is normalised within the US military)

  • same American soldiers making it pretty clear they would happily rape the German women in the apartment.

  • Pitt not really being bothered by his appalling actions above, but dear lord if someone reminds him he once had to put a horse down then he can't handle it.

To portray the sacrifice and conduct of the US forces (in the context of the benevolent way the US Marshall Plan rebuilt western Europe) with this heap of horse manure is bordering on disgraceful. I'm all for artistic freedom but this really did cross a line. If you want to take a pop at US military conduct there is a whole host of other military theatres you could have made your film about, so picking WWII in Europe is utterly bizarre. Fury indeed.

You seem to have a naive view of the lawlessness of war...

Yes, probably a bit of both...

Strange remark about a post that described the Eastern front of WWII as an "atrocity filled disgrace'. If you think US military conduct on the western front was anything like that depicted in this film then nobody can help you.

I honestly dont know how accurate the film was when it came to things like this in WW2. Im sure US soldiers did questionable things, like rape and murder during the war. I mean its war, many people lose their humanity in times like that. But I also understand artistic reasons why the writers went in a certain way. Again, no clue how often stuff like that happened. But I do remember hearing/reading about the Russian soldiers being extremely cruel to the German civilians especially the women.
