Discuss Jane Eyre

Before he became Walt Disney's number one director of choice, Robert Stevenson turned out this effectively gothic adaptation of the Charlotte Brontë novel. Joan Fontaine is merely adequate and Margaret O'Brien is annoying, but Orson Welles broods magnetically as Mr. Rochester and the photography is superbly moody. About on par with the 2011 film - both quite highly recommended. 7/10

Has anyone seen/would recommend any other versions of this oft-filmed story?

I have seen most versions of "Jane Eyre" and not one of them has been a true version of the original story. I don't think I have a favourite because in my view not one of them has done the story justice. Most of them leave whole sections out and cut and shut others. I think it is hard to adapt such a long novel into a couple of hours - particularly as the central section of the novel is just a piece - albeit a very large piece - of padding. It could have been left out entirely and not affected the story very much. I suppose if you read the book then you have your own vision of what the characters should look like and to my mind they have never been cast convincingly.
