虽然这部电影本身是虚构的，但确是根据发生在1996年的真实事件部分改编而来。1996年的八月，巴士司机Marcel Van Loock和Wim Moreels（两人为比利时人）被摩洛哥海关税务机构逮捕，在他们车内伪装的后车厢里发现了700磅的毒品。虽然巴士公司在落网后对犯罪事实供认不讳，并且明确指出这两名司机对车上藏匿的毒品好不知情，摩洛哥法官依然宣判两人在摩洛哥丹吉尔监狱服刑5年。这两人对于突如其来的监狱生活毫无准备，没有食物，没有衣物，也没有医疗保障，他们必须学会如何照顾自己，如何在监狱里生存下去。腐败堕落的看守，对囚犯漠不关心的狱长，还有贪污腐败的律师和法官，以及他们时常遭遇的各种攻击，所有这些只不过是残酷监狱生活的冰山一角而已。他们发现，甚至是自己的政府都对在海外监狱服刑的比利时人毫不在意。而与此同时，他们的家人只能呆在家里，得不到任何有关他们的信息，任何帮助和任何希望。

Marcel Van Loock, een Antwerps buschauffeur, wordt in Marokko onterecht veroordeeld tot 5 jaar cel wegens vermeende drugssmokkel. In de meest erbarmelijke omstandigheden moet hij zien te overleven terwijl zijn familie in België hemel en aarde beweegt om hem vrij te krijgen.

In August 1996, bus drivers Marcel Van Loock and Wim Moreels are apprehended by the Moroccan Customs for drug trafficking. Inside their bus, hidden behind a false compartment, they have discovered 700 pounds of hashish. Although the owner of the bus company is arrested as well and makes a full confession clearly indicating that both drivers were unaware of the hidden drugs, the Moroccan judge sentences both men to 5 years in the Moroccan prison of Tangiers. Nothing could have prepared the two men for life inside a Moroccan prison. Without food, clothes or medical care, they must learn how to take care of themselves to survive their stay in prison. Corrupt guards, corrupt lawyers and judges, a consul who doesn't care and frequent beatings are only part of the terrible prison. Meanwhile their families at home are left without any information, any help or any hope - finding out that their own government doesn't care for Belgian people in prisons abroad.

In den 1990er Jahren transportieren der belgische Busfahrer Marcel und sein Kollege Wim öfters mal Reisegruppen auch nach Marokko. Bei einer dieser Touren entdecken afrikanische Grenzbeamte im Fahrzeug größere Mengen Haschisch, worauf die diesbezüglich ahnungslosen Busfahrer in einem fragwürdigen Verfahren verurteilt und ins marokkanische Gefängnis geworfen werden. Es beginnt eine langjährige Leidenszeit für beide, in deren Verlauf sich die marokkanische Bürokratie als korrupt und die belgische als bürgerfeindlich entpuppt.

En agosto de 1996, dos conductores de autobús belgas, Marcel Van Loock y Wim Moreels, están detenidos por la aduana marroquí por supuesto tráfico de droga. Aunque son inocentes, el juez marroquí les condena a cinco años en la cárcel civil de Tánger: el infierno. No están preparados para sobrevivir ahí. Aparte de un carcelero y algunos prisioneros, a los demás mortales no les importa en absoluto que son inocentes. Lo único que pueden hacer es intentar sobrevivir y aguantarse.
