When I listen to the soundtrack, taking in Mayfield's poignant and introspective lyrics, I'm like, Wow, this is for the same film I'm thinking of? The songs lend the film depth and significance that one might completely miss without them. This is really a matter of artistic evolution... most, if not all, black American filmmakers were pigeonholed into the "blaxploitation" genre then, while black musicians like Curtis were arguably masters of their craft at the same time.
