Discuss Shenandoah

An interesting setup of a family trying to remain neutral while caught in a war, but yeesh this film made characters brainless in order to progress the plot (e.g. kid being allowed to dress soldier by his father in the middle of a warzone, with predictable consequences) and resorted to some of the worst indulgence of coincidence I've seen in a long time (e.g. kid rescued in a battlefield hundreds of miles from home by an opposing soldier that happened to be his neighbour from hundreds of miles away).

Its just a bit of a strange film. The first half is light comedy, the second half is non-stop melodrama (perhaps an intentional juxtaposition to try and make the second half more impactful) with a horror scene thrown into the mix.

Plus we have to put up with Jimmy Stewart's character loving the sound of his own voice and phoney wisdom throughout, when he is actually a drooling idiot that routinely endangers his family. Then he comes out with a standard 'war is an ass' line, when actually his family would have been fine if he'd had two brain cells to rub together.
