Discuss Deep Red

I think the first time my friend and I watched Deep Red was renting it at a place called "Wild and Woolly" on Old Bardstown Road in Louisville, KY in the mid 1990's. They had a bootleg VHS art box, which had the Japanese artwork of Suspiria 2 on the cover. Naturally, we thought it was an actual sequel, so when we started watching it, we were waiting for the... witches to show up. When David Hemmings arrived at the abandoned mansion, we thought "Oh boy! Here we go!"

A few minutes later... "Where's the witches?" And then he found the body, which was unexpected.

After the movie was over, we didn't know if we liked it or not, since our minds were fixated on it being a follow-up to Suspiria. We love it now, now that we can watch it on it's own merits.. I just find that bit to be a little bit... odd.

After doing a little Google searching, this is what I discovered:

"In Japan, Deep Red (also known as Profondo Rosso) is not a sequel to Suspiria. The original title of Deep Red means "crimson” and is completely different from the title itself. However, after the success of Suspiria, which came out in Japan before Deep Red, the distributor decided to market Deep Red as Suspiria 2 to attract more viewers, even though the two movies have no relation to each other. It’s an interesting case of marketing strategy rather than actual continuity between the films!"
