Discuss Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

I was excited when I first heard about this movie. And it isn't all bad. The Silver Surfer was kind of cool, and the scenes of Doom riding on the Surfer's board were kind of iconic (straight from the comics). And they sort of turned Johnny into the Super Skrull, which was kind of cool. They might as well have, because let's face it, Chris Evans was the best part of these movies. Unfortunately Doom was still a fail.

But was really honked me off was the way they turned Galactus into a cloud. Then Green Lantern made the same mistake with Parallax a few years later. But what honked me off more than turning Galactus into a cloud was all the people at the time who defended that decision. Everybody was saying "You can't have a giant space alien in a purple hat, movie goers will never accept that". And yet Marvel put Celestials and Watchers into the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and everybody loved it.

I know, I know, supposedly Galactus was IN the cloud. Some reports are they were saving Galactus for the Silver Surfer spinoff movie that never happened. The funny thing is if they would have had the courage to show Galactus and present him properly, maybe the movie would have been a bigger success, and maybe they could have made that Silver Surfer movie.

I say if you don't want to do Galactus properly, don't try to do a version of The Galactus Trilogy as your movie. Maybe they should have gone with the Frightful Four, the Skrulls, or Annihilus.

Watching this on STARZ now and its not nearly as bad as everyone makes me it out to be...why was it so widely criticized?! OK, so Galactus was a giant cloud and they took some liberties with the Surfer. And there a LOT of comedic elements thrown in, but it is a damn entertaining movie, no less then a typical Marvel movie (IMO Thor Ragnorak was trying WAY too hard to be a comedy), its tough when they try to large a comic book arc in one movie, but this movie isn't that bad!

I had high hopes for it, too. The Surfer was cool as hell, with Laurence Fishburne's voice and all. However, I'm sorry, but Dr. Doom cannot be menacing with Julian McMahon's voice coming out of the metallic mask. It just. Isn't. Possible.

Decent popcorn flick.

Totally agree that Julian McMahon's voice as Dr. Doom is really disturbing. It's like those outtakes of Star Wars before they overdubbed James Earl Jones' voice as Darth Vader. It just doesn't sound right. Sounds like an accountant trying to take over the world or something. Maybe they should have had Fishburne do Doom's voice.

At least this movie wasn't as bad as the Fantastic Four reboot they did later. Even though it fits in with the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics, I've always hated the idea of the FF as brainy think tank kids. Doesn't fit the "family" concept that the great Stan Lee came up with (may he rest in peace).
