محادثة A Perfect Murder

I love this movie. Michael Douglas is slick as Steven Taylor. Tragic how it all went down.

But there were a few really stupid things that almost spoiled the viewing experience for me.

The key thing was stupid, here's why.

First, if the deadbolt is "never checked", then the service entrance door altogether never is, which includes the keybolt. So why not leave both unlocked? No need for all that key foolishness.

Second, Taylor tells Shaw to "jimmy the lock to look like it was broken" but how could an intruder — who had to break the key lock — not ALSO have to get through the deadbolt?

When Taylor jams the screwdriver into the lock, he does not also tamper at all with the deadbolt. So, why don't the cops ever notice or ask why the deadbolt was unlocked? It cannot be opened from the outside, so, it had to have been unlocked and, if it was unlocked, it would strongly suggest an inside job, right?

Taylor tells Shaw he didn't bother making a copy because that would leave a loose end, the locksmith. As it turned out, he was right, the key did end up being a loose end anyway.

It's also grossly convenient that the key for their door perfectly matches the key to some guy's apartment. I mean, if Taylor pulled out a key from the dead man's pocket that did not look like his wife's, he might have figured out that his wife's key was back in the magnet case and grabbed it from there.

The blood on the floor was stupid. He crouched over the dead body, stepping in his blood... but, magically, left no bloody footprint back to the front door. That's not part of the plot, it's more an editing oversight. But it bugged me no less.

The safe combination thing was stupid. This dude is tech savvy. He's in high finance with computers making trades around the world in split seconds. He's got a fancy cellphone we will never see sold at Best Buy, is sharp enough to buy a 7-Eleven no-name phone to make the call to the service entrance phone... but he sets his safe combination to something so easily figured out by his wife? GMAFB.

Ultimately, as in the original, Taylor is smart, but thinks he's smarter than he is. He was so accustomed to being a step ahead of everyone, he couldn't see he was running out of close calls and narrow escapes.
