Een familie uit een klein Texaans dorp bereidt zich voor op de begrafenis van de moeder. De familie is een bont gezelschap. Een zoon kleedt zich al 23 jaar als Tammy Wynette, een andere zoon probeert carriere te maken in Hollywood en twee dochters maken ruzie over wat ze aan zullen trekken bij de begrafenis.

"Sordid Lives" is about a family in a small Texas town preparing for the funeral of the mother. Among the characters are the grandson trying to find his identity in West Hollywood, the son who has spent the past twenty-three years dressed as Tammy Wynette, the sister and her best friend (who live in delightfully kitschy homes), and the two daughters (one strait-laced and one quite a bit of a loser).

Powodem tego zjazdu rodzinnego jest pogrzeb babci. Biedaczka podczas schadzki w motelu potknęła się o drewnianą nogę żonatego kochanka i uderzyła głową o umywalkę. Jedna z jej córek nie potrafi zaakceptować okoliczności śmierci matki. Druga chciałaby zabrać brata z zakładu psychiatrycznego, przyjaźni się z żoną kochanka matki i pomaga jej dokonać aktu zemsty zaplanowanego na noc poprzedzającą pogrzeb.
