This is such a nerdy ST thing to get bothered by, but....

It was so beautifully rendered and looked amazing but it belonged in another science fiction universe. It just looked too advanced for the Federation. It totally dwarfed The Enterprise which should be one of the Federations technological marvels.

It looked like the kind of thing they would discover abandoned that was built by an advanced race.

And on top of that, it was on the edge of known space.

It was built by a combination of different federation races with varying technologies including humans in a neutral part of space. And why do people always complain about absurdity in Star trek? It's really effing weird. The same thing with a user on another board who was surprised a being like Q would exist in the star trek universe. You would've thought that space ships capable of warping space, off world teleportation, space cyborgs, alien/human clones of starship captains, whale talking spaceships and shapeshifters would've clued you guys in by now.

I find it part of the fun of being a Star Trek fan, but each to their own.

Yeah that Space Station was very poor.

The worst thing about it was considering the year on this Kelvin timeline would actually be years before Star Trek 3: The Search For Spock and then comparing Yorktown against the space dock they steal the Enterprise from! Not even vaguely comparable technology...

Very poor how? Bit stupid to say that. Has it occurred to you that the federation may have various docks?

@The Midi-chlorian Count I have read the theory that things in the Federation in the Kelvin timeline are more advanced because they are using technology from Nero's ship. If that's the case I either missed it or it hasn't been presented very well. I think its one of the problems of going back to Kirks time rather than continuing on after Voyager. The spacestation is only here because its now achievable with today's effects. In the same way Voyager could land because it was something the effects could handle, but Voyager landing wasn't jarring at all because it was years and years after Kirk's Enterprise.

I think I've read both Nero's ship tech and the Kelvin coming back causing reverse timeline ripple changes as well (? Not even sure how possible) as excuses / "explanations" but yes the simple actual reason is just today's effects.

The thing for me though is that I'm not even really that bothered about spruced up effects. e.g. I know some people had big issues with Discovery because the look was too modern / polished and would have preferred a recreation of 60s Star Trek sets in a modern TV show (!) but they went way too far with that Yorktown's look simply because the effects tech of today allowed it rather than it fitting in with anything we'd seen in the Star Trek universe.

You're obviously missed the Borg cube making an appearance or the dyson sphere in next gen. Knowing what the hell you're talking about in regards to star trek earns you a lot more credibility than the pity likes you're getting from the OP.

@The Midi-chlorian Count Yeah I agree. The funny thing is I actually think the Yorktown looked freaking amazing. It just belonged in something like an Iain Banks Culture universe rather than Star Trek.
