Über Rat mal, wer zum Essen kommt diskutieren

The film generally ticked along but was a bit heavy handed in its messaging. I liked it highlighting that tolerance is easy to preach, but harder to practice. I liked it pointing out that many of us wrestle internally as we shed our principles, ideals and tolerance as part of the ageing process. Plus John's speech to his father to the effect of "I owe you nothing, you brought me into the world and you were responsible for me" etc resonated.

But I hated the closing speech. I mean, really hated it. Mr Drayton intentionally betrays confidences of pretty much every character, sows the seeds of distrust between the young couple and accuses pretty much everyone present of being an idiot, spiteful or wrong. He even speaks in the past tense about the love for his wife, as she is standing right next to him. At no point does he make mention of his own shortcomings. The man was easily in the top 3 most reprehensible characters in the film, a hypocritical, reactionary blowhard - puffed full of his own importance. Yet the film appears to want us to rejoice in his speech!?
