I think Gamer was misunderstood and underrated... by critics and audiences alike...
The critics clearly didn't see the social satire and the prophetic nature of the film... where they just saw a Crank style Neveldine & Taylor action movie, they completely missed the critique not only of gamer culture, but also a scathing critique of social media/networking and the socio-economic and political forces that could very well propel us into such a near dystopian future...
The audiences, either didn't see the movie because of the name, or it hit too close to home and they simply couldn't process it... focusing on complaining about the shaky-cam actions scenes, or complaining that Michael C Hall's character wasn't enough like dexter... it's like it really triggered their defence mechanism, or they are too trained by TV to focus on celebrity and surface characterisation rather than the themes of the film...
Now that it's been a few years (almost 8) since the release and that a lot of the issues that it highlighted are more apparent... is it time for a reassessment?
Is it time to reappraise Gamer and acknowledge it's place in cinema?
