Toho university hospital has established an outstanding coronary surgery team under the leadership of a up and coming, star, U.S. trained surgeon that specializes in the highly risky "Batista" procedure to shrink the size of enlarged hearts. Normally this procedure has only a 60% success rate, but "Team Batista" has achieved a run of 26 straight successes....when suddenly 3 patients in a row die on the operating table. Very disturbed, the lead surgeon requests an independent investigation. The hospital turns to Dr. Taguchi who is a specialist in psychosomatic disorders who is shocked to at the assignment because she knows nothing in particular about surgery. Assured, however, that this very lack of insider specialized knowledge is in fact the "objectivity" required, she diligently begins to investigate in her own polite, but persistent manner.

L'hôpital universitaire de Toho a mis en place une équipe exceptionnelle de chirurgie coronarienne sous la direction d'un futur chirurgien vedette formé aux États-Unis (Kiji Kikkawa) qui se spécialise dans la procédure très risquée de "Batista" pour réduire la taille des cœurs hypertrophiés. Normalement, cette procédure n'a qu'un taux de réussite de 60 %, mais l'"équipe Batista" a obtenu 26 succès consécutifs.... lorsque, soudainement, 3 patients d'affilée meurent sur la table d'opération. Très perturbé, le chirurgien principal demande une enquête indépendante. L'hôpital se tourne alors vers le Dr Taguchi (Yoko Takeuchi), spécialiste des troubles psychosomatiques, qui est choquée par cette mission car elle ne connaît rien de particulier à la chirurgie. Cependant, convaincue que ce manque de connaissances spécialisées est en fait l'"objectivité" requise, elle commence à enquêter avec diligence, à sa manière, polie mais persistante.

바티스타 수술의 환상적인 성공률로 최고의 명성을 만들어가던 팀이 연이어 세번 바티스타 수술에 실패하면서 사건의 원인을 파헤치는 같은 병원 의사인 타구치와 후생성 조사관 시라토리의 활약을 담고 있는 작품. 다이도 다케루의 베스트셀러를 영화화한 메디컬 스릴러. 바티스타 수술이란 심장의 일부를 절제하는 심장축소수술을 의미하는 단어다. 난이도가 높은 이 수술에서 도조 대학의 바티스타 수술팀은 성공률 100퍼센트의 경이적인 기록을 자랑하지만 최근 세 번 연속 실패하여 환자를 잃는다. 바티스타 팀의 리더인 기류는 실패의 원인을 알기 위해 조사를 의뢰하고 환자들의 고민을 상담하는 의사 다구치가 사건을 맡는다. 단서를 찾지 못하고 별다른 진척을 보이지 않던 조사는 후생성에서 파견된 시라토리의 등장으로 급변한다. 어수룩하면서도 어딘가 이상한 성격의 다구치와 냉정하고 명석한 시라토리는 바티스타팀을 구성하는 7인의 의료진들 사이에 존재하는 복잡한 관계를 파고들며 사건의 진실을 추적해 간다. 영화는 의학의 현실과 병원 내부의 갈등을 스릴러로 담아낸 원작을 따라 가면서 다구치와 시라토리라는 독특한 인물이 주는 재미에 집중한다. 나카무라 요시히로 감독은 때때로 흥미로운 순간들을 만들어내며 웃음과 진지함이 교차하는 두 주인공의 매력을 잘 살리고 있다. 아베 히로시가 시라토리를, 원작과 달리 여자로 설정된 다구치를 다케우치 유코가 연기했으며, 기류를 포함한 등장인물을 맡은 배우들의 연기도 훌륭하다.(권용민)
